THINGS TO DO AND TOP BEACHES TO VISIT IN LEFKADA ISLAND.

After a lot of research that required a long time spent in front of the computer reading reviews, watching travel vlogs on YouTube and following Instagram accounts and hashtags about the most famous beaches in Greece, we found the place that met our requirements to the fullest. Lefkada Island offered us 3 important things that we were looking for: nature, crystal clear water, stunning views. I don’t want to waste your time with things that you can find on Google about this island, I just want to share with you my experiences. So fasten your seat belts because we are jumping right into action!

1. HOW DID WE GET TO LEFKADA ISLAND

Lefkada island is the only island in Greece that is accessible by car. So, we’ve packed our bags and began our journey. We left Bucharest early in the morning and had one-night stop in Thessaloniki, Greece, so we won’t be that tired when we get to Lefkada. On the road are a lot of toll charges which start from 1,20 euro and gets to 3,10 euro. Also, if you are leaving from Romania, don’t forget to buy vigneta in Bulgaria.

THINGS TO KNOW:

  • Bucharest – Lefkada Island: 1 086 km ( 15 h 57 min )
  • Toll charges: 30,8 Euro ( two way )
  • Vigneta (Bulgaria): 38 leva (aprox. 15 euro for one month) (you can buy vigneta for one day, only one week, month or year)

2. MUST-SEE BEACHES IN LEFKADA

  • AGIOFILI BEACH

Agiofili beach is situated in the south of the island. This beach is really small and in the middle of the summer is also very crowded, but once you get there you will be fascinated by the turquoise water and the wild nature that surrounds it. Coming to the beach with regular car is not possible, only SUV can pass some obstacles on the road, so an other way to reach it is by taxi boat. I recommend you to take the taxi boat, it runs from the village of Vassiliki every half an hour, it cost 6 euros to and from Agiofili.

Things to know:

  • Vasiliki – Agiofili: taxi boat – 6 euro (two ways).
  • There are no restaurants, bars or food trucks, only a kiosk that sells water and coffee.
  • There is no toilet.
  • Don’t forget to bring your water shoes.
  • 2 sunbeds and umbrella: 15 euro
  • PORTO KATSIKI

Porto Katsiki is certainly among the most visited beaches in Lefkada, unsurprisingly. The beach is situated on the south-west side of the island and it is the most impressive beach that I’ve seen in my life. Until 12 am the beach is shaded by the giant cliffs. The beach is with sunbeds and little space for placing umbrellas and towels, the other free space is being forbidden because in that place there are falling rocks from the  cliffs (so watch out). Also, the view from the parking lot is a stunning one, with a bridge that unfortunately, is still broken from the earthquake in 2015.

PORTO KATSIKI

THINGS TO KNOW:

  • You can easily arrive to the beach by car. Parking fee: 7 euro/ day; if you arrive after 3 pm then is 5 euro/ day; or free parking at Bilvi restaurant situated at 200 m away from the beach uphill.
  • Water shoes are a must, beach is pebbly.
  • Free delivery down on the beach from Bilvi restaurant. Bilvi restaurant is the only restaurant in the area that offers free parking, free swimming pool and free WiFi.

On the road that leads to Porto Katsiki are a few places where you can park your car and enjoy the amazing view from above the sea and some beaches. We, fortunately, caught the sunset there and enjoyed the warm light of the sun.

  • MILOS BEACH

Milos beach is situated on the west side of the island. A very beautiful and isolated beach. We’ve reached the beach by doing some hiking through the forest, but you can also take the taxi boat. Milos beach used to be a virgin beach, but in the last several years it has been filled with sunbeds and umbrellas.

MILOS BEACH

THINGS TO KNOW:

  • If you want to keep this beach wild and stop the transformation into a very populated and commercial beach, I suggest not to rent the sunbeds and also not to take the taxi boat.
  • Hiking time: 20-25 minutes, the path is not that difficult and it can be travelled by anyone. The footpath goes through a forest so there is shade and also portions with stairs. (If you don’t want to hike, you can choose the easy way to reach the beach by taking the taxi boat for only 3 euros)
  • Take some food and drinks with you, there are no pubs or restaurants.
  • You will need water shoes, beach is pebbly.
  • VASILIKI BEACH

Vasiliki beach is situated in the southern part of the island. This beach has great energy, and if you are passionate about water sports, you will feel like a fish in the sea. Water sports facilities and windsurfing clubs renting equipment are available along the bay. You can also rent bicycles, motor scooters and even ATVs from local businesses or hotels

VASILIKI BEACH

THINGS TO KNOW:

  • Free sunbeds.
  • Very good restaurants, especially in the port.
  • Windsurfing: aprox. 70 euro (includes training)
  • Rent paddle board: aprox. 20 euro/hour
  • Rent motor scooters: aprox. 14 euro/day
  • Rent ATV: 28 euro/day

  • KATHISMA BEACH

Kathisma beach is located on the west side of the island, near to Milos beach. This beach is very well organised, with parking spots, restaurants, bars, clubs, water sports etc. It can get a little bit crowded, but is a nice atmosphere and the water is really great.

THINGS TO KNOW:

  • Parking: free
  • Sunbeds and umbrella: 8-10 euro
  • Nice parties at Copla Beach Bar

  • NYDRI BEACH

Nydri beach and waterfalls are situated on the east side of the island. We first visited the waterfalls and after that we spent the rest of the day at Nydri beach. The beach is very small, full with sunbeds and umbrellas and the water isn’t that amazing. It was nice that the resort had a lot of restaurants, pubs, clubs and souvenir shops.

3. OTHER THINGS TO VISIT

  • NYDRI WATERFALL

If you want to get away from the crowded beaches in Lefkada for a day, Nydri Waterfall is a good place to start. It is situated just a couple of minutes (by car) from Nydri village. After we left our car in the parking spot, we’ve walked about 10 minutes before we reached the waterfalls. The walk through the nature was very pleasant with great views.

NYDRI WATERFALL

THINGS TO KNOW:

  • Parking: free.
  • Climbing (more walking): 10 minutes.
  • You can take a bath in the water.
  • Come early if you want to take artsy photos, avoid the crowd and stay alone in those natural pools.
  • LEFKADA TOWN

Lefkada town is situated on the north east coast and is the capital of the island. Unfortunately, we visited the city on the last day of our trip, not having enough time to explore it. I got lost while staring at those colourful houses and photographing the narrow streets. I recommend you to put this on your visit list.

  • Do snorkelling!
  • Try water sports!
  • Get up early so you can have the entire beach just for you.
  • Explore as many beaches in Lefkada as you can.
